Israeli troops kill Palestinian, arrest 20 in West Bank

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Israeli forces manning a checkpoint at the entrance to the town of Jenin north of the West Bank Saturday shot and killed a Palestinian, while about two dozen were arrested in military sweeps across the occupied territories.

The daily Yedioth Ahronoth, citing military sources, reported that troops opened fire when the Palestinian tried to stab a soldier at the Jalameh checkpoint at the northern edge of Jenin, killing him instantly.

The daily's website said no soldiers were harmed at the checkpoint, which is manned by both troops and civilian guards.

The victim, who was not identified, was the latest fatality by the Israelis in weeks of violence in which about fifty Palestinians were killed and over two thousand injured by army fire. Ten Israeli settlers and soldiers were killed and dozens injured in stabbing attacks and clashes with stone-throwing Palestinian youth.

In a bid to calm the escalating situation and forestall another Palestinian uprising, Israeli occupation forces had imposed a series of arbitrary measures, including widespread arrests of suspected activists and throwers of rocks and molotov cocktails.

Troops rounded up about 20 people during raids overnight and this morning across the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Prisoners club, an NGO monitoring the occupation's crackdowns, said in a statement that troops stormed the cities of Hebron, Nablus, Jenin and neighbourhoods in Arab Jerusalem, and arrested the men, whom the occupation authority labels "wanted".
