Turkey- Turkish expats in UK set to vote

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Voting in the Turkish parliamentary election will begin in the U.K. on Thursday two weeks after polls opened elsewhere in Europe.

More than 75000 Turkish nationals in the U.K. are eligible to vote in the election with a majority expected to cast their ballots at the Olympia Exhibition Centre in West London. Those living in Scotland and the north of England will vote at the offices of the Turkish Consulate in Edinburgh.

Polling stations will be open between 10am and 7pm local time each day between Thursday and Sunday with voters permitted to cast their ballot at any time within those hours.

Emirhan Yorulmazlar the Turkish consul-general in London said previous experience suggested the earliest hours tended to be the busiest.

He told Anadolu Agency: "Based on experiences from earlier elections it would be beneficial to come to the polling stations after the first day and first hours. That will ensure voters can cast a vote in the easiest and quickest way.

"Entries and exits from the building will be faster in this election. We have taken all possible precautions for a robust and secure election; all minds should be rest at ease on that matter."

Turkish citizens can visit www.ysk.gov.tr to check whether they are registered as an overseas voter and to see the polling station they have been assigned.

They can vote after presenting any valid document carrying a national identity number known in Turkish as the T.C. Kimlik Numaras.

Yorulmazlar said Turkish citizens whose identity documents had expired would be able to renew them at the election centre before casting their vote.

More than 28600 people voted from the U.K. in the last Turkish general election on 7 June.

Overseas voting ahead of the forthcoming election began on Oct. 8 in European countries with large Turkish communities including Germany and Austria.

All overseas ballot papers will be flown next week to Turkey where they will be counted alongside domestic votes after polls close across Turkey in the evening of Nov. 1.
