Turkey- Fishermen rescue 37 Syrian refugees off Turkish coast

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Fishermen rescued Wednesday 37 Syrian refugees trying to reach a Greek Island from Turkey as the boat their capsized.

Sources from the Turkish Coast Guard have said that refugees -- many of whom women and children -- were trying to reach the Greek Island of Lesvos from Balikesir’s Ayvalik district western Turkey.

The refugees were later taken on board a Turkish coast guard vessel to be handed over to the police.

Refugees claimed they had paid 1100 Euros each to reach the Greek island.

The International Organization for Migration said Tuesday that weekend Greece arrivals exceeded peak summer day totals.

"On Friday (16/10) over 8900 migrants crossed into Greece; on Saturday (17/10) arrivals exceeded 9100; and on Sunday (18/10) arrivals approached 9200" OIM said.

OIM said that a total of 507000 people have crossed to Greece in 2015 (until Oct. 20) and at least 291 have drowned.

Almost all refugees arriving Greece take the perilous journey through Balkan states to reach mainly the EU countries of Germany France and Scandinavia.
