'Netanyahu tries to delude, deceive world on Jerusalem'

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The Palestinian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday warned against Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's "deceitful and delusional" propaganda and his mischaracterisation of the situation at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa Mosque compound.

It also cautioned against the Israeli government's attempt to impose new conditions in the occupied holy city by force through Netanyahu's reiteration and assurances to the world that Israel had no intention to change the status quo at the Haram al Sharif compound, Islam's third holiest shrine.

"The truth is precisely the contrary", the Palestinians ministry said in a statement, adding that the Israeli interpretation of the status quo is simply to underline the change and measures imposed by the occupying power at the sacred site, including temporal division by setting certain daily hours for visits by Jews and allowing settlers and ultranationalist Jews to storm the shrine.

Israel has designated daily hours for Jews to visit, but not to pray, at the site in a perpetual provocation that had triggered the current violence sweeping the occupied West Bank that had spread to the Gaza Strip and to Israeli cities. At least 40 Palestinians and eight Israelis were killed in the ongoing violence. The ministry cited daily Israeli harassment of Muslims and religious guards at the Al Aqsa mosque, including holding Palestinians' IDs and imposing age and gender restrictions on entry to the mosque as a first step to impose the division of the mosque by time and move on to divide it by space.

The statement warned against "this conspicuously misleading propaganda Netanyahu and the right-wing in Israel are trying to promulgate", adding that maintaining the status quo means demanding that Israel, the power of occupation, immediately repudiates all these measures and stop the settlers' storming of the site.

It said all the occupation authorities' measures are a flagrant violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention and the signed Oslo Accords, which barred any actions that prejudice the final status issues, including Jerusalem.

"Israel, via its vicious occupation and repression, is trying to undermine final status issues and unilaterally settle them according to its perspective", the statement added.

The ministry urged the international communities "not to fall in the trap of the systematic Israeli delusion aimed to perpetuate the occupation and settlement and undermine the two-state solution".
