UN stresses Jordan's special role in Jerusalem

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The United Nation Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed Jordan's special role in the occupied holy city of Jerusalem, calling for dialogue between Israel and the Kingdom in this regard.

During his meeting late Tuesday with Knesset members Isaac Herzog and Tzipi Livni, the UN official in a statement underscored "the importance of direct dialogue between Jordan and Israel , in line with previous agreements between the two countries and in recognition of Jordan's special role." The secretary general added " he is particularly concerned regarding the situation at Al Aqsa Mosque and the religious dispute over it, which has serious repercussions not only for Israel and Palestine but throughout the region. " He warned that unless urgent action is taken, dynamics on the ground will only get worse and the violence will be exploited by religious extremists, according to the statement.

UN chief has urged the Israeli government to help calm the situation and adhere to its commitment in maintaining the status quo in the Haram al Sharif, in line with agreements between Israel and Jordan.
