Syrian President makes surprise visit to Moscow

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Syrian President Bashar al-Assad flew to Moscow on Tuesday, on his first overseas trip since the civil war broke out in his country in 2011.

During the unannounced visit, al-Assad held talks with President Vladimir Putin on their joint military campaign against the opposition in Syria, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.

Syria's President said Russia's involvement had stopped the spread of terrorism becoming more widespread and harmful.

Putin said that the Syrian people had been "almost alone resisting and fighting international terrorism for several years".

He said Moscow's hope, in providing a "positive dynamic in the fighting", was that a "long term resolution can be achieved on the basis of a political process with the participation of all political forces, ethnic and religious groups".
