Iraq assures US over its military cooperation with Russia, Iran, Syria


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Iraqi Defense Minister Khaled Al-Obaidi assured the US Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford that his country's military cooperation with Russia, Iran and Syria is not against any country.
In a press statement by the Ministry of Defense, Al-Obaidi stressed that Iraq is keen on distancing itself from regional or international conflicts as well as alliances and counter alliances.
Cooperation with Russia, Iran and Syria focuses on exchanging of intelligence information that helps Iraq army in its fight against the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Later, the visiting US General also met Iraqi Premier Haidar Al-Abadi to discuss bilateral relations and the latest military and security developments in Iraq.
They also touched upon the Iraqi demands for the US to boost its military support to the Iraqi army, especially through training and weapon supplies.
During the meetings, Gen. Dunford underlined the strength and depth of US-Iraqi relations and the high-level partnership between the two countries' militaries.
He also expressed the US readiness to upgrade military cooperation with Iraq to boost the efficiency of the Iraqi forces in battle fields.
