UN chief invites Yemeni gov't to new round of talks with Houthis

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged Yemeni legitimate President and government to engage in a new round of talks with Houthi rebels and their allies to find a peaceful solution for the conflict in the impoverished Arab country.
The UN chief's invitation came in a letter sent to the Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi and handed by the UN Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Alshaikh Ahmad.
President Hadi held a meeting with his advisory body and a number of ministers on Sunday briefed them about the UN Secretary General's letter.
He noted that the UN chief has informed him that the Houthi rebels have confirmed their acceptance of the UN Security Council resolution 2216 of 2015.
The UN official noted that the Houthi rebels' endorsement of the UN resolution would pave the way for a political solution to the current impasse.
Meanwhile, GCC Secretary General Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani met Sunday the UN Envoy who briefed Al-Zayani about the UN Secretary's message to the Yemeni president and his invitation to Yemeni parties to start a new round of crisis talks.
They expressed their hope that new talks would lead to a peaceful solution on the basis of the GCC initiative and its executive mechanism and the outputs of the Yemeni national dialogue conference to restore security, peace and stability in Yemen.
The GCC chief reiterated the GCC's support to the UN efforts to broker a deal to end the suffering of Yemeni people.
Last April, the UN Security Council adopted resolution 2216 demanding the Houthis to withdraw from all areas seized during the latest conflict, relinquish arms seized from military and security institutions, cease all actions falling exclusively within the authority of the legitimate government of Yemen and fully implement previous Council resolutions.
The resolution called upon all Yemeni parties to abide by the Gulf Cooperation Council and other initiatives and to resume the United Nations-brokered political transition.
Acting under chapter VII of Charter, the body also imposed sanctions, including a general assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo, on Abdulmalik al-Houthi, who it called the Houthi leader, and Ahmad Ali Abdullah Saleh, son of the president who stepped down in 2011.
