Kuwait- IPU cmte discusses rights of women migration

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Dimensions of women's migration were the focus of discussions of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians, on the sidelines of the 133th session of the IPU in Geneva on Saturday.
The meeting, attended by Kuwaiti MP Khalil Al-Abdullah, addressed the factors that force women to migrate, and the challenges and opportunities they have through the ordeal.
Participant delegations discussed the arrangements that have to be taken to protect the migrant women's rights, especially asylum seekers.
Discussions have been based on women's rising migration for economic reasons, and it was revealed that such migrants mainly work in the non-official sector, almost with no safeguards, like home maids.
According to the IPU committee, many migrant women flee political prosecution at home, and they are likely to fall victims to sexual violence during conflicts. Even in a new land, they may fall prey to human trafficking, forced marriage or honor crimes.
During the meeting, member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Ismat Jahan stressed parliamentarians' role to push governments to care for the rights of migrant women.
According to the committee 2014 data, migrant women hit 123 million, 29 million of whom were forced to migrate. Up to 900,000 women last year sought asylum after fleeing conflicts or the repercussions of catastrophes.
