Egypt, Russia discuss developments in region


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with Russian President's Special Envoy for the Middle East and North Africa Mikhail Bogdanov in the Egyptian capital Saturday.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed development of the situations in Syria, Iraq, and the occupied Palestinian territories, foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmad Abu Zeid said in a statement.
They both stressed the importance of resolving the Syrian crisis through activating the political solution of the 2012 Geneva I Communique, the Egyptian spokesperson said, adding that Shoukry and Bogdanov also affirmed the need to counter terrorist organizations, particularly in Syria, as an important step towards the political solution in that country.
The Egyptian and Russian officials also addressed the efforts exerted by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura to form an international contact group to help Syria exit its current crisis, Abu Zeid said, noting that Mistura's efforts would also help in activating the Geneva Communique.
Meanwhile, Bogdanov, who is also Deputy Foreign Minister, explained reasons and circumstances that forced Moscow to increase the volume of its military intervention and air strikes against ISIL's strongholds.
He also reiterated his country's commitment to work with various sides to find a peaceful solution for the Syrian crisis in accordance with the Geneva Communique.
