The 16-year-old girl who fell to death from her seventh floor apartment in a suspected suicide case in Sharjah on Tuesday was remembered as a "jovial and helpful" student.

The Indian girl R.M was a grade 11 commerce student in the Sharjah Indian School. According to the police she jumped to death from her home in Abu Shagara on Tuesday morning within a week after an 11-year-old British boy of Yemen origin died in the same manner in Sharjah's Al Majaz area.

While the police suspect that the girl committed suicide and are investigating a relative of the girl claimed it could have been an accidental fall.

The girl's uncle who did not wish to be named told Khaleej Times that he did not find any concern that bothered the girl whose family hails from the south Indian state of Kerala. The parents also reportedly told the police that the girl was in good mental health and no abnormal behaviour was noticed in her.

"All I know is that she had not gone to school because she had an upset stomach headache and dizziness" the uncle said.

According to him the girl's mother last saw her watching TV and having breakfast. "Her mother gave her rice porridge and went to the bedroom. Her father was also at home when the incident happened."

He claimed the girl might have leaned out of the window in the living room after hearing some sound from outside. "As she had already complained of giddiness I think she might have lost balance and fallen."

The uncle said the girl's parents never picked a quarrel with her in the name of studies and had a control over her Internet usage.

The school's Principal K. R. Radhakrishnan Nair described the student as a jovial child who was always helpful to other students.

"She has been studying here since grade four. She was an average child who used to score A2 grade in most subjects. I knew her personally and she didn't seem to have any issues that would make her think of any extreme step."

He said the girl's semester exams had gotten over on Thursday. "She did not come to school on Sunday as they had Islamic Studies exam which is meant only for Muslim students. But she didn't turn up on Monday and Tuesday as well. We don't know the reason. We got the news of the tragedy at around 11am on Tuesday" he said.

On Wednesday a condolence meeting was held in the school where the girl's younger brother is studying in grade seven.

A team from the school's management visited the grieving family on Tuesday while the vice-principal and some teachers visited them on Wednesday the principal said. He added that he would also visit the parents who are said to be in a state of shock.

The autopsy result and forensic reports are awaited and the body will be handed over to the family after legal formalities are completed.
