8 foreign varsities seek SEC licence for Qatar cus

DOHA: The Supreme Education Council (SEC) is currently studying applications from eight foreign universities to set up their branches in Qatar a senior official said yesterday.

The universities are from the UK US India and Germany.

“Any applicant meeting the required standards will be granted a licence based on an academic and administrative feasibility study” said Dr Khaled Al Horr Director of Higher Education Institute at SEC.

He was addressing a press conference at the SEC premises to announce details of the sixth Qatar International Exhibition of Universities from October 19 to 21. The event titled “Towards diversity innovation and creativity” will take place at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC).

The exhibition will feature 113 local and international universities and 14 institutions from the private sector. There are several new entrants this year with a 13 percent increase in participants compared to last year.

Until this month the number of Qatari students who have received government scholarships has reached more than 3000 said Al Horr. Of these 1600 students received scholarships to study in universities in Qatar while 1400 students were chosen to study abroad.

The Education Institute at SEC increased extra allowance for scholarship students by 10 percent in 2013 while allowance for those studying in Japan was raised in 2014.

The scholarship amount for each students is enough to have a decent life. Countries attracting majority of the Qatari students are UK US and France among others.

The scholarships are distributed to more than 800 universities and colleges in 40 countries. Local scholarship represents 55 percent of the total scholarships.

As for the exhibition Al Horr said there are some educational institutions from Malaysia Spain and Turkey that are participating for the first time. Institutions offering international examinations such as iBT ACT SAT TOEFL and IELTS are also participating.

Cultural attaché of the embassies of Japan France US and Canada in Qatar will also participate.

“The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness among students and parents about the available educational opportunities worldwide and answer their queries” said Al Horr.

Procedures for obtaining scholarships and educational visa academic environment cultural and social contexts in the respective countries will be explained at the exhibition. The event will be open from 9am to 1pm and from 5pm to 8pm.

The Higher Education Institute is seeking to expand the academic technical and other areas of specialisation required for the Qatari job market and encourage innovation and creativity said Al Horr.
