(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) European Union High Representative Federica Mogherini met an Iranian delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Amin Abdollahian in Brussels Tuesday to discuss the situation in Syria, her spokesperson Catherine Ray told a news conference.
She noted that the meeting comes after Mogherini received a mandate yesterday from the EU Foreign Affairs Council on "how to actively promote a more constructive regional framework." The meeting will be followed by a senior officials meeting from both sides to continue discussion on this issue, she said, adding that a press release will be issued later today to give more details about the EU-Iranian talks.
Meanwhile, Ray claimed that there is a united European position on two tracks regarding Syria, a political track which is to support UN efforts to solve the Syrian crisis and the second track is the security one which is the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) known also as Daesh.
She said that the EU foreign ministers during their meeting in Luxembourg on Monday expressed deep concern on the Russian military attacks that go beyond Daesh and other terrorist groups and called on Russia to stop these attacks and to contribute to a political solution.
The spokesperson stressed that the head of the Syrian regime Bashar al-Assad cannot be part of any future government but added that representatives of the regime could take part in the negotiating table.
