(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Kuwait is committed to achieve gender equality and promote women empowerment in accordance with its constitution, Kuwait's delegation to the 70th annual meeting of the UN General Assembly has stated.
Kuwaiti legislators had been keen on providing women with all legal protection and to pass laws that foster equality between men and women, reads the statement of the State of Kuwait to the UN Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee meeting, held Tuesday.
The statement, read out by Kuwaiti Embassy's Third Secretary and Member of the Delegation to the General Assembly meeting Ahmad Marzouq Al-Duwilah, added that the state laws also take into account the positive discrimination for working women to help them deliver their maternal role.
It noted that Kuwait women are enjoying their full suffrage rights: the right to vote and the right to run for offices in public elections.
Kuwait women also occupy leading posts in the government and are an integral part of the state decision-making process. They are ministers, ministry undersecretaries, diplomats and police personnel, the statement pointed out, adding that there are plans to appoint women in non-combating posts in the Armed Forces.
The statement stressed that Kuwait considers women and men as equal partners in the state building and development processes.
Kuwait has also signed all UN and international conventions related to ending of discrimination against women, it added.
Meanwhile, Al-Duwilah underlined Kuwait's support to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's efforts to help vulnerable and traumatized women worldwide, especially Palestinian women who are suffering from the illegal practices of the Israeli occupation.
He also emphasized that Kuwait would continue its financial and non-financial support to the UN's efforts to fight gender inequality and to empower women across the globe.
