Shivkumar Sharma to perform in Dubai

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Dubai is gearing up to host an instrumental concert - JAL - by the legendary Santoor maestro Shivkumar Sharma.

The two-hour show will take place on October 23 at Centrepoint Theatre in Mall of the Emirates and will feature an exciting instrumental blend of the Santoor, Tabla and Ghatam.

Sharma first performed in Dubai over three decades ago. Since then, he has been invited to perform several times across the UAE, each time with a different ensemble, creating a unique experience for connoisseurs of Indian classical music.

Reflecting on his long association with the Santoor, the Padma Vibhushan awardee said, "I was born and raised in Kashmir and I have always been influenced by the nature that surrounded me. My father introduced me to the Santoor when I was 13 and since then it has been a long journey of discovery and creation. The music of the Santoor brings out a deep connection between music, man and nature."

As an artist who believes in bridging the divide between people through music, Sharma talked enthusiastically about Dubai and how it has become one of his favourite places to perform. "Dubai is a great mix of different nationalities and it is wonderful how they all come together to appreciate music. That just proves that music is the one universal language that goes beyond caste, creed and nationality."

Performing alongside Sharma will be renowned percussionists Yogesh Samsi on the Tabla and Giridhar Udupa on the Ghatam. The trio, performing together for the first time, will create an improvised recital from start to finish embellished with rhythmic flavours from the North and South of India.

Tickets start at Dhs100, available from www.ductac.org. For more details, call 04 323 6112.
