Qatar- New five year health strategy from 2017

DOHA: The Supreme Council of Health (SCH) is currently working on the next five-year National Health Strategy 2017-2022 which will lay more emphasis on workers’ health and wellbeing a senior SCH official said yesterday.

The new five-year plan will be launched after completion of the current National Health Strategy 2011-2016.

It will address a wider area of health issues including work place wellbeing of both blue-collar and white-collar workers said Dr Mohammad bin Hamad Al Thani Director of Public Health at SCH on the sidelines of Employee Health and Wellbeing Conference which opened here yesterday.

“We are working on another public health strategy following the success of the first strategy. It will be launched after completing this strategy by next year” said Dr Al Thani.

“The 2017-2022 public health strategy is ambitious and will cover more areas than the first strategy to prepare the country for the 2022 FIFA World Cup protecting lives and reducing disabilities” he added.

He said there will be more focus to have a better environment for health. It will address the occupational health problems of not only the blue-collar workers but also the white-collar workers from different sectors.

Speaking about workplace injuries and health problems Dr Al Thani said that the incidents have significantly decreased over the past few years and the aim is to reduce it by five percent each year.

“Occupational injuries have reduced by 40 percent although the population has increased in the recent years” said Al Thani.

The new strategy will also include implementation of early warning systems for communicable diseases like Ebola and MERS preventing work place stress introducing healthcare education for children oral health and eye care strategy.

It was earlier revealed that four years after the launch of the National Health Strategy 2011-2016 it has completed 61 percent of its projects a 17 percent increase from 2014.

“The major outcomes (of National Health Strategy 2011-2016) are building and strengthening efforts to fight obesity having pre-marital tests to prevent genetic diseases popularisation of immunisation programmes lower outbreaks of infectious diseases and creation of an electronic awareness system on communicable diseases” said Dr Al Thani.

The NHS 2011-2016 has set six goals as a comprehensive world-class healthcare system — an integrated system of healthcare offering high-quality services preventive healthcare a skilled national workforce a national health policy that sets and monitors standards and high-calibre research.
