Jordan- 1 killed, 6 injured, including 5 police, in Irbid arrest operation


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) A man was killed and six people were injured, including five policemen, during an operation Saturday to arrest a suspect in the desecration of a cemetery near Irbid, according to the Public Security Department (PSD).

"Acting upon receiving information that the suspect had desecrated the Islamic Cemetery in the town of Samma and destroyed headstones, a security force moved in to apprehend the person after identifying him", said a statement by the PSD media centre.

It said that during the operation, the police faced tough resistance put up by the wanted man, his brothers and relatives, who used firearms, stones and sharp objects against the members of the security force.

The statement said that the police "were prompt" in apprehending the suspect, who had a sword in his possession, and a brother, adding that five policemen were injured, two seriously who remained under medical observation.

It said another brother of the suspect was killed when he was struck by a bullet, whose source remained unknown, and a third brother was injured.

An investigation team was assigned to examine the case and refer those involved to judicial authorities, it added.
