DOHA: Qatar and Saudi Arabia are finalising preparations for establishing an electronic link between customs authorities of the two countries.

The issue was discussed at their fifth joint meeting attended by Ahmed bin Ali Al Mohannadi Chairman of Qatar’s General Customs Authority and Saleh bin Manie Al Khelawi Director General of Saudi Customs.

The meeting discussed procedures for completing the electronic link that will connect the customs outlets of the two countries said a statement issued by the Authority yesterday.

Al Mohannadi said that the project aimed at removing all obstacles that can affect exchange of commodities between the two countries. This will reflect positively on the economies of Qatar and Saudi Arabia and GCC states in general.

“We are giving final touches and discussing obstacles before operating it in full capacity” said Ahmed Eisa Al Mohannadi Assistant Chairman General Customs Authority who also attended the meeting.

Al Khelawi said the electronic link is a comprehensive project to support the flow of customs-related information. It can also contribute to exchanging information about violators and smugglers and effective monitoring. Other benefits include keeping a count of goods and vehicles passing through the ports of entry. The project will be first implemented at Qatar-Saudi border posts in Salwa-Abu Samra and later extended to other customs outlets in both countries he added.
