(MENAFN- Arab Times) Germany is an important economic partner to Kuwait, as Kuwaiti investments in the European country has amounted to $17.7 billion, Acting Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah announced on Tuesday.
In a joint press conference with the visiting German Foreign Minister Frank- Walter Steinmeier, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled encouraged more German investments in the country as the Kuwaiti market provides foreign investors with all needed facilitations. He pointed out that an earlier meeting with the German minister was "productive and fruitful." It tackled many trade and economic issues, military and power sector cooperation, in addition, to collaboration in the fields of health, education and construction. The Kuwaiti Minister also expressed appreciation for Germany's cooperation in exempting Kuwaiti tourists from obtaining the Schengen visa to enter Germany.
During the conference, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled shed light on some of the regional matters such as the Iranian file, where he stressed the importance for both Iran and the GCC countries to start a dialogue to secure stability in the region. On Syria, he expressed appreciation to Germany's effort in creating homes for 120,000 Syrian refugees as an implementation to a decision made by the European Commission. He added that more humanitarian efforts should be exerted to relieve the suffering of the Syrians.
The Kuwaiti minister also discussed the situation in Iraq and how it is important to support the political process in order to achieve a national reconciliation and to bring back stability in the country. As support to Iraq, Kuwait offered it $200 million in humanitarian aid and postponed collecting Iraqi compensation to Kuwait for a year. Finding a peaceful solution under the UN resolution no. 2216 is essential to stabilize the situation in Yemen, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled said. Kuwait also gave Yemen $100 million to aid the peace process there. He hoped for peace in Libya and reiterated the importance to halt all Israeli aggression in the Palestinian territories. Earlier Tuesday, the German minister had met with His Highness Deputy Amir and Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah where he lauded 51 years of solid ties with Germany.
