Jordan- Turkey Says Russian Fighter Jet Violated Its Airspace With Syria

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Turkey on Monday said a Russian jet fighter violated its airspace with Syria over the weekend and warned against future breaches.

A Russian plane entered Turkish airspace south of the southern Hatay province shortly after noon local time on Saturday, returning to Syria after two Turkish F-16 jet fighters on patrol intercepted the aircraft, the Foreign Ministry in Ankara said in a news release.

Also Monday, Turkey's armed forces said two of its F-16s were harassed by a MiG-29 warplane while on patrol along the Syrian border on Sunday. The MiG-29 is a Russian-made jet fighter also used by the Syrian air force, and Turkey said it wasn't clear to what country the jet belonged.

Turkey, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, summoned Moscow's envoy in Ankara to protest the violation and demand that Russia refrain from any future breaches, though Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu later played the incident down, The Wall Street Journal said.
