Jordan- Ministry, UNDP discuss launching legal aid system


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The Ministry of Justice, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Saturday held a discussion on devising an optimal perspective on creating a legal aid service system and coordinate national efforts for this task.

According to a UNDP statement, the meeting tackled the necessary guidelines to build a legal aid system capable of providing high quality services at the national level and facilitate access to these services by the largest possible segments of society.

It said the session, attended by representatives from the ministries of justice and social development as well as the Legislation and Opinion Bureau and other state and civil society entities, was one of five encounters that will focus on details to determine the legal services eligibility controls, economic feasibility, quality criteria and agree the national model. Justice ministry secretary general, Judge Ahmad Al Jamaliyeh, stressed the importance of pooling resources by all stakeholders towards building a high-quality, efficient and fair national legal aid system to provide service to the largest possible eligible groups.

UNDP country Director, Zena Ali Ahmad, said that the UN agency is willing to support the national efforts to institutionalize the legal aid system based on the UN Principles and Guidelines on Access to Legal Aid in Criminal Justice Systems, and in line with the goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which include the Promotion of the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all.

Chairman of the Bar Association, Samir Kherfan, indicated that the association is the principal reference supervising the legal aid system in coordination with the Ministry of Justice.

Also attending were representatives from the National Centre for Human Rights, the Higher Judicial Council, civil society organizations that operate in the justice sector and relevant governmental and non-governmental organisations.
