Volkswagen Suspends Sale of Some Diesel Vehicles in Australia

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Volkswagen (VW) will suspend the sale of some diesel vehicle models in Australia while it addresses the scandal over emissions-cheating devices, the company announced Saturday.

German news agency DPA reported today that the auto giant said it was immediately stopping the sale of vehicles fitted with 1.6- or 2.0-litre EA189 diesel engines. "The suspension will remain until the emission issues are addressed in those vehicles," the VW Australia statement said.

Audi also announced it was suspending the sale of vehicles with 2.0-litre EA189 diesel engines that are certified to the European emission standard EU5. That includes Audi A4, A5, and Q5. Customers will be told in coming weeks how their cars will be retrofitted. There are an estimated 40,000 diesel vehicles in Australia that could be caught up in the emissions scandal.

The government met VW and Audi executives on Friday and told them they must report next week on the extent of the use of the emissions-cheating devices in Australia.
