Qatar Organizes High Level Event on Women, Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, in collaboration with the Permanent Missions of Italy, Thailand, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) hosted a high level lunch on "Women, Crime Prevention, Criminal Justice and the Post-2015 Development Agenda", on the sidelines of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly.

The high level event, chaired by UNODC Chief Yury Fedotov, drew notable speakers to discuss the role of women in crime prevention and criminal justice.

High profile speakers included: the President of the 70th United Nations General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft; the wife of the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Soon-taek; Academy Award winning actress and UNODC Goodwill Ambassador, Mira Sorvino, the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Post-2015 Development Planning, Amina Mohammed, and other high level speakers.

HE Dr. Al Qahtani, Director of the International Organizations Department, delivered a speech on behalf of HE the Foreign Minister Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah.

Dr. Al Qahtani highlighted the importance of the meeting which followed a series of historic meetings mainly the 13th Crime Congress which was held in Qatar in April 2015, and adopted the Doha Declaration on integrating crime prevention and criminal justice into the wider United Nations agenda.

He underlined that policies and institutions of the criminal justice must better reflect the contributions and valuable role of women as part of the Post-2015 Development Agenda, stressing the need to ensure safe and peaceful societies in order to fulfill the obligations to achieve sustainable development.

Sustainable development can not be achieved without putting an end to all forms of discrimination and violence against women, and ensuring the effective participation of women in political and economic life, he added.
