10 Palestinians injured in Israeli raid into West Bank city

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Israeli troops shot and injured 10 Palestinians Saturday during an army raid into the city of Nablus north of the occupied West Bank that triggered clashes with stone-throwing local youth, according to Palestinian sources.

The Nablus governor's office said that soldiers used live fire during the raid resulting in most of the injuries. It said the injured were rushed to the local Rafidya Hospital for treatment, and that all were listed in a moderate condition. Medical sources said four of the injured had suffered bruises after being assaulted by soldiers.

Palestinian security sources said 12 people were arrested after troops carried out searches of Palestinian homes in the city during the early morning raid.

The latest raid into Nablus, one of the largest West Bank cities, exacerbated an already tense situation fueled by Israeli provocations represented in the repeated storming of occupied Jerusalem's Al Aqsa Mosque compound by extremist Jews, including members of the right-wing government.

The raids into the Haram al Sharif, one of Islam's holiest places, along with military restrictions on Muslim worshippers have stoked tensions and touched off clashed on and around the compound that spread across the West Bank.

The Israeli raid into Nablus was part of a large-scale military crackdown following the killing of two Jewish settlers in a shooting that occurred near settlements east of Nablus. The military have deployed four battalions across the West Bank as the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to hunt down the attackers, who fled the scene of Thursday night's attack.

The occupation authorities have also sent police reinforcements to Jerusalem's walled Old City, where the Haram al Sharif compound is located, as they kept in place tight controls on the entry of Palestinians, while allowing visits by ultraorthodox Jews and settlers over the Jewish holidays.
