Jordan- PM: No political objectives from national census

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour, on Saturday was briefed on preparations to conduct the Kingdom's national census due to take place in November 30th and insisted the government had no political objections behind it.

Presiding over a meeting of the Higher Ministerial Committee of the General Population and Housing Census at the Department of Statistics, Ensour stressed the importance of the census in providing scientific and comprehensive data that contributes to making the right decisions based on facts and credible and accurate figures.

He said the 10-day census, which is being conducted once every ten years, aims to provide the government, the public and private sectors, researchers, students and all stakeholders with basic facts and figures in the Kingdom, in order to take right decisions based on correct information.

Ensour added that the census, the final results of which will be released in February 2016, is a national economic and social process related to various aspects of life, pointing out that if the figures were flawed, decisions would be built on the wrong decisions as well.

"All countries of the world conduct a census of their populations and housing, and we are conducting this census under the law, which required a general census about social life in the Kingdom once every ten years", the prime minister said.

"The last census was conducted in 2004, and here we are in 2015 conducting the census," he noted.

The premier called on citizens to contribute in "this great national event" and cooperate with census workers, to accomplish the mission that serves every citizen and successive generations.

He added that the census data and figures will provide information about the Kingdom's schools, health centers, hospitals, water and others services and sectors.

Ensour pointed out that the timing was "accurately" set in late November and early December so that ordinary people would be available for the census, explaining that "if it were to take place in the summer, there will be large numbers of guests and expatriates, and if it were conducted during the Hajj season, the information would be inaccurate, as thousands travel for the Hajj".

He added that this year's census will include "all those who exist on Jordanian soil" and is not only meant for citizens who hold the Jordanian nationality or the national number, or is aimed the refugees or foreign workers.

The prime minister stressed that there is no political reason for the census, adding that the issue is not about Syrians, Egyptians, Iraqis or others on Jordanian soil.

He also stressed that the census data will be kept confidential and is only for statistical purposes and "will be of no harm to any citizen". "The census will only include figures not names," the prime minister pointed out.

He reiterated the government's readiness to provide the Department of Statistics with support, in terms of human cadres to carry out this national effort.
