Kunduz deaths "tragic" but cause unknown, Pentagon says

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Pentagon on Saturday said it is looking into what caused the "tragic incident" at a 'Doctors Without Borders' hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, after it was hit from the air resulting in the deaths of three staff members.
The NGO has said that a US airstrike hit their building, but the Pentagon made no mention of such an attack.
"(Kunduz) has been the scene of intense fighting the last few days. US forces in support of Afghan Security Forces were operating nearby, as were Taliban fighters," Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said in a statement.
"While we are still trying to determine exactly what happened, I want to extend my thoughts and prayers to everyone affected," he added.
"A full investigation into the tragic incident is underway in coordination with the Afghan government. At this difficult moment, we will continue to work with our Afghan partners to try and end the ongoing violence in and around Kunduz," he affirmed.
