UAE- UN gets its first female Emirati senior adviser

Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak Chairwoman of the General Women's Union has hailed the appointment of the first Emirati woman as a senior advisor at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York.

Shaikha Fatima who is also Supreme President of the Family Development Foundation and Head of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood described Hind Abdulaziz Al Owais's appointment as another addition to the achievements of Emirati women.

The appointment she said is part of the country's strategy for empowering women and promoting their achievements in regional and international circles.

She wished success to Al Owais in her assignment as an "honourable model for Emirati women".

Al Owais has served as a career diplomat since 2000. During her work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs she served as special assistant to the Foreign Minister.

Most recently Al Owais served as a counselor and acting deputy permanent representative of the UAE Mission to the UN. In this role she led and managed a number of initiatives the most recent of which was a series of panel discussions on women peace and security. The series was part of the UAE Mission's activities at the UN aimed at promoting the Women Peace and Security agenda.

Al Owais holds a Master's of Arts in public policy from the New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and a Master's degree in International Affairs from the Lebanese American University.

She is currently pursuing a doctorate at the New York University's Steinhart School of Culture Education.

Noura Khalifa Al Suwaidi Director of the General Women Union said Emirati women are reaping the fruits of efforts by the country's wise leadership in boosting their role in all spheres.

She praised the role Shaikha Fatima is playing in empowering women to participate in the process of development and become decision makers in the legislative executive and judicial authorities. - Wam
