Jordan FM, EU foreign affairs commissioner discuss Syria

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Foreign Minister, Nasser Judeh, and the European Union foreign affairs commissioner,Federica Mogherini, held a ministerial-level meeting on Tuesday during the UN General Assembly annual debate to discuss the situation in Syria.

Middle East countries, including those housing Syrian refugees, as well as international aid groups and UN agencies attended the meeting.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis, Jordan have called for a three-level approach that includes supporting Syrians inside their country, assisting Syrian refugees in host communities and providing more assistance to refugee host countries, Judeh said.

Donor nations, however, have cut off aid to more than 230 thousand beneficiaries of food aid in Jordan, the minister who is also deputy prime minster added.

" If large economic countries are facing economic hurdles, how could Jordan deal with a 21 percent increase in its population,"Judeh said.

He said such increase have impacted the Kingdom's education, health and water sectors, and exhausted local communities' vulnerable schools where educators on times run two-shift school system.

In spite of all that, Jordan, under King Abdullah directives, continued to provide the possible aid to refugees despite the enormous pressure on the Kingdom's economy and its limited resources, Judeh added.

Jordan supports a solution inclusive of all Syrians that is based on the Geneva 1 resolutions, that would safeguard Syria's security and territorial integrity, he said.
