KUALA LUMPUR: Oil and gas giant Royal Dutch Shell is to cut 1300 jobs from its Malaysian operations over the next two years the company said.

Shell Malaysia which has a total workforce of 6500 people said in a statement late Tuesday that the move was aimed at removing complexity in order to become more competitive.

"We are strengthening our organization by prioritising productivity and efficiency without compromising on safety and reliability" chairman Iain Lo said. "Continuing business as usual is not sustainable."

The company is due next year to celebrate its 125th year in Malaysia where it spans upstream operations including a deep-water oil field venture in the state of Sabah and Sarawak and downstream operations including being one of the country's biggest retailers of fuels and lubricants.
