US companies boost hiring in September: report

(MENAFN- AFP) US businesses increased hiring in September, continuing a trend in overall job growth in the labor market, according to a report by payroll firm ADP released Wednesday.

ADP said the private sector added 200,000 jobs in September, stepping up the hiring pace from August's revised 186,000 payrolls gain.

"The US job machine continues to produce jobs at a strong and consistent pace," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, which helps compile the ADP employment report.

"Despite job losses in the energy and manufacturing industries, the economy is creating close to 200,000 jobs per month. At this pace, full employment is fast approaching," he said.

The ADP report came ahead of Friday's much-anticipated September jobs report from the Labor Department.

Analysts expect the US economy added 205,000 jobs, after 173,000 in August. The unemployment rate was projected to remain unchanged at 5.1 percent, a seven-year low.

"The ADP data continue to show no sign of any slowing on a trend basis. That is also the message from jobless claims," said Jim O'Sullivan, chief US economist at High Frequency Economics.

"The implication: the overall labor market continues to improve, with domestic strength offsetting foreign weakness."

ADP noted that large companies, those with at least 500 employees, had contributed over half of the job gains in September, at 109,000.

"The largest companies appear to be starting to overcome the impacts of weak global demand and the high dollar, while the smallest companies may have pulled back as concerns about the resiliency of the US economy grew and consumer confidence softened," said Ahu Yildirmaz, head of the ADP Research Institute.
