Afghanistan- Kunduz witnesses severe clashes near airport


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Over 100 people including Taliban rebels have been killed and hundreds other wounded as clashes between Taliban and security forces continued near the airport of Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province on Wednesday.
Afghan security forces with support of foreign troops have launched operation to retake the Kunduz city, the provincial capital; a day after Taliban captured most of government buildings and areas by launching a massive coordinated attack from various directions.
Afghan security forces claimed to regain control of several government offices and parts of Kunduz as clashes continued near the airport.
According to local media reports, at least 93 Taliban insurgents have been killed in a US troops operation and air strikes in Kunduz city.
The Ministry of Public Health on Tuesday said so far 16 people had been killed and 170 others, a majority of them civilians, wounded during the clashes.
Local officials confirmed that Taliban had set free about 600 prisoners including 110 Taliban prisoners from the central jail in Kunduz after capturing the facility.
President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani in a televised address to the nation said that Afghan forces had tactically retreated from Kunduz City to avoid civilian casualties and the northern city was being cleared of militants.
He further said, "We assure the people the province of Kunduz is under the management of security forces." Ghani said that the enemy had sustained heavy losses as a result of better coordination among security forces.
