EU: Assad cannot be part of any future govt in Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The European Union (EU) stressed here Monday that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad cannot be part of any future government in the country.
"Because of his involvement in the civil war it is impossible to imagine that he should be part of a government in the future. That is the EU position," Catherine Ray, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini told a news conference.
However, she said, there should be negotiations.
"Contacts are taking place and will continue in the next hours and days. Syria will be on the agenda for discussions at the UN General Assembly in New York," she added and underlined EU support to UN efforts to resolve the Syrian conflict.
