Qatar gears up for WAFF U 23 Ch&ionship

DOHA: Qatar Olympic football team began a training programme yesterday ahead of the upcoming West Asian U-23 Football Federation (WAFF)Championship starting from September 30 in Doha.

Hosts Qatar will open campaign against Palestine on the opening day followed by a second match against Jordan on October 3 and the Felix Sanchez’s side will conclude the preliminary stage with a clash against Yemen on October 6.

The semi-finals of the event will take place on October 10 while the title clash will be held on October 14.

The prestigious event is bringing together ten teams distributed into three groups A includes hosts Qatar Palestine Jordan and Yemen group B comprises KSA Iran and Bahrain and group C includes UAE Oman and Syria.

Qatar coach Sanchez announced a 27-member squad for the West Asian U-23 Championship last week. The list includes the names of players who appeared at the 2015 U20 FIFA World Cup held in New Zealand in June this year.

The Doha tournament is an event that is expected to help the participating teams prepare for the AFC Asian U-23 Tournament to be held in Doha next January.

The final squad of 22 will be announced closer to the event Sanchez said.

It may be recalled that the Qatar U-23 squad recently underwent extensive training tour of Zurich and Austria to train for the AFC and WAFF U-23 championships. The AFC event will be held in Doha and will serve as the qualifying event for Rio Olympics next year. The draw ceremony for the event was held in Doha. THE PENINSULA
