(MENAFN- AFP) German luxury carmaker Daimler issued a firm denial Friday against claims by a lobby group accusing it of also rigging pollution tests, as Volkswagen has admitting to doing.
"We categorically deny the accusation of manipulating emission tests regarding our vehicles," said the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz and Smart vehicles in a statement.
"A defeat device, a function which illegitimately reduces emissions during testing, has never been and will never be used at Daimler," it said, adding that that is true for "both diesel and petrol engines."
"Our engines meet and adhere to every legal requirement," it said, adding that it was "evaluating our legal options" on the claims made by German environmental protection association DUH.
DUH has alleged that there are "detailed signs of emission manipulations" by several car manufacturers.
Apart from Volkswagen and Audi, which are already engulfed by the scandal, DUH claims that Daimler, BMW and Opel -- a General Motors subsidiary -- are also involved.
BMW had on Thursday issued its denial of any deception, after its share prices slumped over a report in the weekly Auto Bild that emissions from one of its diesel cars exceeded EU limits by 11 times.
"The BMW group does not manipulate or rig any emissions tests. We observe the legal requirements in each country and adhere to all local testing requirements," the group said.
Germany's powerful car industry has come under intense scrutiny following revelations that Volkswagen had installed software in up to 11 million cars that could cheat pollution tests.
