Qatar Reiterates Commitment to Supporting Palestinian Economy


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Qatar has reiterated its commitment to supporting the Palestinian economy, creating development projects, and providing all capacities and resources to remove the effects of the aggression and reconstruct Gaza Strip and other Palestinian territories.

HE Ambassador Faisal bin Abdullah Al Henzab, Qatar's permanent representative to the United Nations and other organizations in Geneva, made the remarks as he addressed the 62nd session of the Trade and Development Board on the article covering aid from United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to the Palestinian people.

HE the ambassador stressed the importance of the session as it reviews the role of UNCTAD in assisting the Palestinian people in line with the outcome of UNCTAD XIII in Doha in 2012.

HE expressed Qatar's concern in relation to date in the UNCTAD report that suggest decrease in development rates in Gaza Strip and other Palestinian territories due to the Israeli blockade.

He said that Qatar is continuing with its support for the Palestinian economy through donations that have reached more than $1.4 billion to carry out projects such as constructing 1,000 residential units for those whom houses were demolished. Work is also set to start on the second phase of Hamad city, which will include over 1,200 residential units, after the first phase, which included 1,000 units is complete.

The Qatari diplomat highlighted UNCTAD's efforts in supporting the Palestinian people and alleviating their suffering because of the Israeli siege that interrupts the movement of people and goods and leads to an increase in employment and shrinkage of the economy.
