Qatar- Jazz is back

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) It is that time of the year. It's jazz time. Returning after summer break, Jazz at Lincoln Centre, Doha is all set once again to move its stage from its St. Regis Doha station to the outdoors, holding a free community concert at Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) park once a month.
The first of these concerts is taking place on October 7 under the stars and stunning views of Doha in the MIA Park.
Directed by Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Centre has a global partnership with St. Regis, bringing two New York icons together to concept and create a series of jazz clubs around the world in St. Regis hotels. The first jazz venue is at The St. Regis Doha.
It develops jazz programming, providing both the novice and aficionado the opportunity to experience world-class jazz, learn about its rich history and understand its cultural value in a modern, authentic and bespoke way.
Wynton Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, educator and a leading advocate of American culture. He is the world's first jazz artiste to perform and compose across the full jazz spectrum from its New Orleans roots to bebop to modern jazz.
By creating and performing an expansive range of brilliant new music for quartets to big bands, chamber music ensembles to symphony orchestras, tap dance to ballet, Wynton has expanded the vocabulary for jazz and created a vital body of work that places him among the world's finest musicians and composers.
In 1987 Wynton co-founded, and became Artistic Director for Jazz at Lincoln Centre and Music Director for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. In July 1996, due to its significant success, Jazz at Lincoln Center was installed as new constituent of Lincoln Center, equal in stature to the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, and New York City Ballet.
It was a historic moment for jazz as an art form and for Lincoln Center as a cultural institution. In October 2004, with the assistance of a dedicated board and staff, Marsalis opened Frederick P. Rose Hall, the world's first institution for jazz.
Under Wynton's leadership, Jazz at Lincoln Center has developed an international agenda presenting rich and diverse programming that includes concerts, debates, television and radio broadcasts and educational activities.
Offering the discerning diner and lovers of live music a memorable experience in an urban setting, Jazz at Lincoln Centre is also resuming 'The Dinner Show' from September 24 this year. The show allows both artistes and audience to engage, lending a feeling of an intimate private performance over dinner.
The new programme embraces the diverse and inclusive musical culture, soul and creativity of New Orleans and New York City. Featuring some of the most exciting vocalists and Jazz artists on the New York City scene, together with musical gems of Doha, The Dinner Show will feature Blues, Swing, music of the Jazz greats and global musical cultures in a unique way that can only be heard at the centre in Doha.
Some of the key line-up includes Richard Johnson, from Pittsburg. Richard has strong territorial jazz roots and is a member of Wynton Marsalis' Septet and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.
Shenel Johns, the vocalist, has been commanding the stage since the age of 14. A Jamaican vocalist, she is becoming not only one of the most dynamic voices of her generation, but is also staying true to her eclectic style including Jazz, R&B, Soul, and Gospel. She will feature in the performances until October 28.
