Oman Sail takes part in Bart's Bash event


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Youngsters from Oman Sail's youth programme joined thousands of sailors around the world as part of this year's Bart's Bash the largest sailing event in the world as a tribute to sailing legend Andrew 'Bart' Simpson on September 19.

Established in 2013 Bart's Bash is a global sailing event in aid of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation that brings together thousands of people from more than 60 countries.

Bart a reputed British sailor who had won a gold medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing China was killed in the capsize of Artemis Racing catamaran that he was skippering on May 9 2013 while training for the America's Cup in San Francisco Bay in the US. He was 36.

Last year it brought together over 30700 people from 52 countries worldwide who sailed over 86000km to set the record for largest sailing race in the world as verified by Guinness World Records.

Oman Sail dedicated the first ranking race of the winter season at its sailing school in Musannah to the cause and joined the worldwide sailing community.

A group of 50 sailors aged 15 and under took part in the races that were held in Optimist Laser 4.7 and for the first time Techno 293 windsurfing classes.

In the Optimist class Al Moatasem al Farsi finished first while Mohammed al Qasmi came in second. Marwan al Jabri completed the podium.

Khamis al Wahaibi triumphed in the Laser 4.7 class with Salim al Alawi finishing second and Abdul Aziz al Wahaibi third. In the maiden windsurfing ranking race Abdul Majeed al Hadhrami came out on top ahead of Abdullah al Sarhi. Hammad al Mujaini was third. Oman Sail operates a windsurfing club with eight participants aged 12-15 currently part of the club.

Overall the Al Mouj Sailing School Muscat topped the table with the best six results from all ranking races Musannah Sailing School finished second Marina Bandar al Rowdha taking the third place and Oman Sail's newest school in Sur fourth.

Rashid al Kindi Oman Sail's manager of national youth teams said 'The ranking races provide a platform to showcase their talent and take the next step in their sailing careers as part of the national squad and compete in Optimist Laser 4.7 and windsurfing competitions around the world.'

He added 'Bart's Bash was a wonderful opportunity to join the wider sailing community and show our shared passion for a sport that has transformed the lives of so many young people.'
