Jordan- FM, UN official discuss Syrian refugees situation

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, Nasser Judeh, discussed with the UN Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Stephen O'Brien, the humanitarian situation of Syrian refugees and its impact on host communities.

The two sides stressed the importance of a political solution that ensures the safety and security of Syria, with the participation of various components of Syrian people based on the Geneva 1 decisions, adding that a political solution would enable Syrian refugees to return to their country.

Judeh pointed to the huge burden Jordan has to bear as a result of hosting more than 1.6 million Syrian refugees and providing them with services despite the Kingdom's limited resources. The minister called on the international community to assume its responsibilities toward Jordan, which, he said, is performing this humanitarian role on behalf of the world.

He expressed Jordan's appreciation for the United Nations bodies for their humanitarian role and providing assistance to the Syrian refugees.

O'Brien thanked the Kingdom for providing a safe haven for refugees, stressing United Nations support to enable it to continue "this noble humanitarian mission".
