(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida left Japan for Russia on Sunday to hold talks with his Russian counterpart to set the stage for Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Japan within the year.
Kishida's visit comes amid tensions between Tokyo and Moscow over top Russian officials' repeated visits to some of the Russian-held, Japanese-claimed islands at the heart of a long-standing bilateral row that has prevented the two countries from concluding a post-World War II peace treaty, according to Japan's (Kyodo) News Agency.
During his four-day trip, Kishida will hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss ways to cooperate in settling the isles row, Japanese officials said.
