(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Kuwait will mark tomorrow the World Alzheimer's Day which aims at spreading awareness on the causes of the neurological disease and expresses support towards those who have it.
Alzheimer is a disease that causes degradation to the brain cells, leading to memory loss and other disorders. The disease was discovered in 1906 by German Psychiatrist Dr. Aloysius "Alois" Alzheimer.
The recognition of the disorder came after 60 years of its discovery with initial researches to find the causes starting some 20 years later.
Speaking about Alzheimer to KUNA, Dr. Yousef Al-Awadhi, neurological disease specialist and surgeon, said that there were several centers in Kuwait dedicated to diagnosing neurological disorders include Alzheimer.
Alzheimer leads to the degradation of brain cells which results in memory loss and difficulty in processing thoughts as well as speech, said Al-Awadhi, adding that the disorder usual affects people over 65 years of age but could happen to people below the age of 60 in some cases.
The causes of the disease varies from severe head trauma, cardiovascular diseases, and genetics, said Al-Awadhi, adding that statistics have shown that there were around 4.5 million people suffering from Alzheimer in the US with the number expected to reach 14 million in 2050.
