Qatar Committed to Supporting the Syrian People, Ambassador Says

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Geneva, September 19 (QNA) - The State of Qatar that it will stand by the Syrian people during their crisis by providing all the necessary humanitarian aid, the country's Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva HE Ambassador Faisal bin Abdullah Al Henzab said Saturday.

Al Henzab was representing Qatar during a high level meeting held in Geneva to discuss the humanitarian conditions in Syria. He added that the Qatari government, with the directives of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, has strived to ease the difficult humanitarian conditions that Syrian people are struggling with.

He noted that Qatari aid to the Syrian people since 2011 has reached around $1.5 billion. The aid included food, clothes, medicine and shelter among other things. Qatar has recently also provided assistance to Syrian refugees stranded on European boarders.

Al Henzab said that the Syrian people have started seeking refuge in Europe because they feel abandoned by the international community. It has been five years since the crisis exploded on the scene and there is yet to be a resolution. He noted that the reason many of those refugees who made the trip were trapped in areas of conflict that found very little aid, rather than a desire for a different lifestyle.

The Qatari Ambassador then stressed that the UN Security Council is required now to assume its responsibility towards the violence in Syria. (QNA)
