French Turkish official reprimanded over flag call

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) An elected official in France has received a written warning over his plea on social media for people to display the Turkish flag to honor soldiers and police martyred by the terrorist organization PKK.

Yavuz Yildiz who is the relative of a policeman killed in a PKK attack in Turkey’s Sirnak province on Aug. 7 was warned by the mayor of Colmar in France’s northeastern Alsace region that his call did “not align with the objective principles of the republic.”

Mayor Gilbert Meyer also told him to “choose between being an elected official” or someone that shared “religious content” online.

Yildiz who is of Turkish descent made a call on Facebook on Sept. 14 for people to show solidarity with Turkey’s security forces and condemn terrorism by hanging a Turkish flag from their homes.

Meyer’s letter was published on Facebook prompting comments that included those asking how calling flying the Turkish flag as a symbol against terrorism could be viewed as religious.
