Tsunami warnings across Pacific after magnitude 8.3 earthquake hits Chile
SANTIAGO 17th September 2015 (WAM) -- Five people were killed after an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.3 on the Richter scale hit Chile last night causing the authorities to evacuate about one million people from coastal areas after tsunami warnings were issued by the Chilean Navy.
Schools have been suspended in north-central coast areas of the country until further notice.
According to the National Earthquake Centre at the University of Chile the earthquake struck 36 kilometers away from the city of Canela Baja in the Coquimbo region which lies 500 kilometers north of the capital city Santiago.
