Qatar- Training planned for Fath Al Kheir participants


(MENAFN- The Peninsula)DOHA: The Katara Beach Department will organize training to equip participants of Fath Al Kheir 2 necessary skills such as firefighting first aid and rescue ahead of their voyage en-route to India.

Safety measures have been adopted in Fath El-Kheir 2 with the long journey which will last for nearly two months.

Four life boats seating 16 persons each as well as life jackets for everyone aboard in addition to

12 spare jackets have been provided.

Beach Department Director Ahmad Al Hitmi yesterday announced a trial journey will be held in the near future aboard the same or similar dhow to get sailors accustomed to the sail and the long trip.

Al Hitmi said the sail is 80 percent ready as well as the route map to this journey which will start from Katara beach on October 5.

For the route map help was requested from Nakilat to decide on the licensed ports that can host the dhow in case of emergency during the journey.

Al Hitmi said that the Beach Department is coordinating with the Indian embassy in Doha to ensure the journey runs smoothly. For instance entry visas and a permission to use the commercial port in Mumbai have been obtained. In Oman authorities have been contacted so the dhow can use Sur Port on the way to India and Muscat port on the way home.

A meeting will be held soon to assign the sailors their duties based on their expertise and qualifications.

The Fath Al Kheir dhow will leave Katara Beach on October 5 sailing through the Arabian Gulf and the Arab Sea via Oman before arriving in Mumbai in India. The dhow returns to Katara on November 17 to coincide with the launch of the fifth edition of Katara International Traditional Dhow Festival.
