Turkey: hundreds of refugees found on Aegean coast


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Turkish gendarmes have found nearly 640 refugees in the west of the country trying to reach Greece.

According to local sources gendarme teams started a search in the coastal Ayvacik district of western Canakkale province on Monday.

Hundreds of refugees from Syria Afghanistan Myanmar Iraq and Iran were in Behramkale village.

It is thought they were attempting to reach the nearby Greek island of Lesbos. Police detained seven people on charges of organizing the attempt.

Local villagers offered water to the 637 people who were later brought to a refugee center near Behramkale Gendarme Station. Among their number was a pregnant woman who was treated by a health team.

Gendarme squads searching the area seized five boats a quantity of life vests plus firearms and ammunition.
