Oman boys claim GCC U19 crown


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A fortnight after the Oman U17 boys claimed the GCC crown it was the turn of the U19 team coached by Rasheed Jaber to lift the regional crown in Doha Qatar on Saturday night.

Oman edged past Bahrain 5-3 in a tense penalty shootout to claim the coveted GCC U19 trophy after both the teams were locked in a 1-1 stalemate at the end of regulation-time.

After conceding a goal in the 26th minute through Ammar Hardan's breakthrough Oman trailed for the larger part of the regulationtime to eventually equalise in the 70th minute - through a Talal al Awadi strike - to take the contest to a tie-breaker.

In the shootout Salah al Yahyai Bakheet Fadhil Ahmed Jameel Talal Khamis and Saeed al Heedi were all on target for Oman while Bahrain's Talal Ali al Naar sent his team's opening spot-kick wide.

Mohammed Yousuf Ali Hassan Jafar and Ziyad al Jassim converted for Bahrain. Earlier on Thursday Oman pipped Saudi Arabia in the semifinals also in a shootout.
