Saudi Arabia launches 'Mashaer' Railway in Makkah

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Saudi authorities announced Saturday the plan to operate the USD-1.77-billion Mashaer Railway project in Makkah.
The project was completed and handed over to the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs by China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC), said the Ministry in a statement.
The project was in development for last six years and is to connect the holy cities of Makkah, Arafat, Muzdalifa and Mina.
The Chinese developer was responsible for the design, supply, construction, operation and maintenance for the project under a contract.
Mashaer Railway involved the construction for railway lines stretching more than 18.5 kilometers, along with nine railway stations and a parking area.
Five trains, developed as part of the project, will transport around 72,000 passengers an hour in each direction.
According to CRCC, the train successfully operated over five Haj seasons from 2010 to 2014 and transported 16 million pilgrims during that time.
