Kuwaitis clinch one gold, two silvers at GCC athletics event

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Kuwaiti athletes clinched one gold and two silver medals on day one of the Ninth Gulf Cooperation Council Disabled Athletics Championships, which runs for another five days in Doha.
Nawaf and Nayef Shamrookh, both deaf athletes, were first and second respectively in the javelin, with Ahmad Al-Mutairi claiming silver in the T33 100m run.
The competition, held at Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium, was officially launched in a ceremony a day earlier by Vice President of the Qatari Olympic Committee Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al-Thani to the attendance of several other senior Qatari and Gulf sports officials.
Commenting on the event, chief organizer Khaled Al-Mohannadi said it offers a great opportunity to raise awareness on the accomplishments of the disabled community in athletics.
"They (disabled athletes) will prove undoubtedly that facing challenges, no matter how difficult they may be, is possible and that there is no limit to what goals and aspirations may be accomplished," said Al-Mohannadi.
"We also hope that their exceptional performances help break barriers and change notions in the (Gulf) region," he added.
