Shooting: Engachov Vitaliy shine in Association Cup

Doha: Dovgun Vitaliy and Oleg Engachev bagged the top honours in yesterday action in the Qatar Shooting and Archery Association Cup at Losail Shooting Range.

Vitaliykept his cool to overcome the challenge of Ali Rashid Al Muhannadi to emerge on top in the Men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions.

In the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Engachev topped with a new national record.

In the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Vitaliy and Muhannadi were involved in a gripping battle for the top honours but it was the former who managed to hold his nerves and emerge the winner today. He posted 450.8 to win by just 1.1 points.

On Friday Muhannadi had put up a fine display of concentration to win the 50m Rifle Prone gold and Vitaliy finished third.

Vitaliy and former Olympian Viacheslav Skoromnov were quite close during the qualifying stage yesterday and got 1164 and 1163 scores respectively. But in the final Vitaliy and Muhannadi held the spotlight with their absorbing battle in which the Vitaliy eventually finished on the top. Skoromnov got the third place with 431.5 points.

Vitaliy said the win is a perfect preparation for the upcoming Asian Championships in Kuwait.

“I feel good to win the gold medal before the Asian Championships in Kuwait. It was a nice training before the next step. All of us now preparing for the last chance to go to the Olympic Games in Rio” Vitaliy said.

Engachev who won the Asian Games gold medal in the 25m Centre Fire and was sixth in the Standard Pistol in Incheon last year was pushed a lot by Ivan Bidniak. Engachev had an identical 290 in both the stages which enabled him to beat Bidniak by two points and create a new national mark. The previous best of 476 belonged to Noor Murad but Engachev improved it by four points. Bidniak recorded 288 but improved in the second to collect 291. Konstantin Maltsev was a way down third with 559. Engachev said: “Yes I’m really glad about my performance as I got a new national record. It was a good going for me in my second home. I’ve been living here for five years. “It was nice to win with the record today. Surely this performance will boost me during the World Military Games” Engachev added.

Mohammed Saad al Mubarak bagged the Junior Men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions title.
