Turkey: Cizre curfew lifted

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The eight-day curfew in the town of Cizre in Turkey's southeastern province of Sirnak has ended at 7 a.m. local time (0400GMT) Saturday officials said.

The local governorate had announced on Friday that the curfew which came into effect on Sept. 4 would end on Saturday.

Anadolu Agency photos from the town reveal the devastation: Many homes workplaces and cars were damaged and set ablaze by terrorist PKK members during the curfew.

The terrorists appear to have used the burnt cars -- as well as ditches and sand bags -- as barricades to prevent police officers from entering the town.

Local sources who asked not to be named over security concerns said the PKK members asked town residents to leave their doors unlocked so as to easily escape from security forces.

Bullet marks were visible on the walls of apartment buildings several of which were reportedly torched by PKK terrorists.

Turkish security forces have been conducting an anti-terror operation around the town of Cizre to counter PKK attacks which resumed in late July following Suruc bomb attack.

The suicide bomb attack on July 20 -- blamed on Daesh -- in the province of Sanliurfa killed 33 people.

The renewed violence has stalled the "solution process” officially initiated in early 2013 aimed at ending the 30-year conflict between the PKK and the Turkish state.

Since July more than 100 members of the security forces have been martyred and hundreds of PKK terrorists killed in operations across Turkey and northern Iraq including airstrikes.
